Touched by Vera Frankel

Gabe's not the only one who has been inspired by Vera Frankel.

I found this tribute video to her focusing on the same piece, "This is your messiah speaking", that is installed in the elevator:

Walker Court - Day 1

Had a good first day shooting tonight, except for a battery issue and an evil tour guide (watch out for those!).

For the surreal things education of Syrus and Gabe, this is the Busdriver song I was talking about this evening (the quote comes in at the break, about a minute & a half in). For the record he's actually even faster live:

HVX time lapse

Make sure the camera is in the P2 mode.....push the "menu" button on top of the camera....go to option #5 "Recording setup"......Select "Recording Format" and choose 720p/60.......make sure the wheel on the back of the camera is set to F1, F2 or F3......on the same menu page go down two clicks and select "Rec. Function" when you select it, choose "Interval"....then go down two clicks to "Interval Time" and select the number of frames you want to record per second...minute...etc. A good starting point is 1 frame per second. Now everything is selected......push the menu button a couple of times to get rid of it.....now you'll see a green flashing "I-Pause" at the top of the screen. The camera is ready to record timelapse.....push the record button and your off! To get out of the pause mode, switch the camera off for a moment and go into playback mode to check your recording.

Sorry: Presence at April 18's Video Meeting

Hey all - Liselle, Joe, Gabe, Danielle, Kelvin, Jessica, Syrus, and Sarah,

I can't be there tomorrow because I'm trying to stay hydrated and well. I've had a stomach flu and lost 10 lbs! I've been feeling a lot better since last week though but hope you'll forgive me for missing out on video techniques (my loss eh?), your love for clapping for reasons unknown, finding more trap doors other than the one in the corner (dundunDUN), and getting in trouble with AGO staff at the gallery for intruding into "installation in progress" spaces.

I have, however, come up with a shot list. I think Sarah might have devised a shooting schedule, no? I may need a few actors for my shoot day(s) in May, and I'll ask for favours individually:

1. a girl at a bar, with a guy going up to her to talk to her, but girl gets offended and slaps him/throws water in his face (possibly Liselle and Joe? please?) (ok I'm kind of asking favours in the open)
2. delivering a "line", literally, at the door, like a pizza delivery
3. A guy asking a barber to getting a "lineup" done
4. waiting in line
5. wearing in-line skates (volunteers?)
6. wearing a lined skirt and an a-line shirt (does anyone have a skirt with lines on it?)
7. shot of a ballet dancer in an arabesque or whatever position that demonstrates "line"
8. a lot of people in a line-dance class
9. lion dance (could be found footage)
10. Person putting eyeliner and lipliner on
11. Oceanliner (Could be found footage)
12. money clipped on a line blowing in the wind (a line of credit / money on the line)
13. fingers nudging a line or rope to align with another line or rope
14. lining muffins with paper cups

That is about all I have, others (very little drawings) would be pure animation.

Thanks guys, enjoy your workshop!

a clip for CK

1992 Toronto Rodney King related riot clip that i mentioned:

Getting Ready For Greatness

I can't believe how fast this process is moving. Before we know it, it will be August and the exhibit will be up in the AGO with Eye Weekly and The Toronto Star interviewing us in regards to the best thing that has happened to the gallery since the makeover!

As for myself, I am taking little steps in making my contribution work. I am planning out what clips I want to use or research, then looking over a background soundtrack. Where am I going to get all these found footage clips? Is there one magical place I can go to get them?

I'll use Youtube first as a reference and make a rough edit of what clips I'd like to include. Would creating a person doing an "introduction" ruin the art of the video? Do I want the viewer to think about it for them self as opposed to being told that the following clips question "honour"?

I definitely feel that I'm on the right pace. I would totally like to create the mini-book to go along with the video as well!!

Video Layout Currently

Okay, well I've been saying I was going to type out my plan for awhile now, so I'm doing it now and just putting it up here. It's not exactly scene for scene but sort of a more detailed plan.

 • starts instantly (no fade in) with a medium foggy shot with a shower running out of the shot
 • the shower turns off, there is a rustling sound as the woman gets on a towel, etc. (all not seen in the shot)
 • then the woman enters the short with a towel on her head and a towel, slip, etc. on.
 • the camera moves to a close up on the mirror and the woman's foggy reflection
 • The woman takes a small wash cloth and wipes off the mirror and consequently the shot becomes clear
 • there is a cut to a medium shot of an artist sitting at a desk (preferably tilted diagonally, like a architect's drawing easel of sorts is what I'm think of) putting down a piece of fresh paper and picking a drawing utensil (either a pastel or charcoal) before taking a deep breath and moving their charcoal (using it as an example) to the paper
 • cut to the woman in the bathroom picking make-up from a box or bag and laying them out on the bathroom sink. I'm debating as to whether I just want the close up of her face as she looks down or if I want a medium shot where you can actually see her choosing the make-up. Then she starts to apply cover-up.
 • cut to the artist who has now began sketching. I know with the shots of the artist I want it to move from medium shot, to close-up, to extreme close-up then rapidly pull it all back to a medium short at the end, but I'm not so sure as to what I want in between. I know I want the sketching to get faster and the artist to make mistakes and have to start over but their not as specific as with the woman. So I'm basically deciding whether it even matters what their sketching. But I want it to have an end so I guess they should actually be going for a picture. I figure maybe they can be doing maybe a fashion sketch just because it sort of straddles the line of ideals of feminine beauty and art, which I like. I'm thinking about it.
 • The cuts to the woman will go cover-up, eyelash curler, mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, lipstick/lipgloss, with a few mistakes where she stops and wipes some things off etc.
 • second last shot is the pulled back medium shot of the artist finished their drawing
 • cut to the woman, pull back slowly from the extreme close-up to close-up shot. There is a pause where the woman just looks at herself. Then she sighs, takes her hair out from where it's been held up by a towel, plugs in a hair dryer and starts to blow dry her hair
 • abrupt cut to credits
so yeah, that's what I have all typed up.

update from the court

so, i'm not dead! (that was a serious question during the time of our last meeting --- i had accepted & trusted bread from a friend and had an allergic reaction and was in hospital).

most things in my life are more organized now and so i thought i would share.

i've done a fair bit of research on my original idea, including looking at other interventions in the gallery space of walker court etc. this has led me to decide that while i still like most of my idea, i don't like or rather disagree with what i was focusing on and need to change that.

last night i went to the gallery and spent a few hours in walker court and took about 80 pictures (!) from a variety of different angles and places within the space to try to get me to think about things within a limited frame. i'm still mentally processing that right now. it was very useful for me to observe the traffic levels and traffic patterns on a more crowded night.

i'll let you know my new and hopefully greatly improved thoughts on saturday and present my rewrite at that time.

Update + thoughts

Hey everyone, sorry for missing the Saturday meeting. I've been thinking about my project and I'm starting to sway away from the idea of an animation for "Line." Originally I was thinking that drawing lines could be in line with (haha I'm Punny) the theme, but through my observations on the subway on my commute to and from school/work I have realized how great/beautiful lines in real life could be. So proposal draft 2 -> draft 3 will be completely revamped.

As Joe said: I'm just completely confused.

Could we go to Hot Docs when it's happening? I always miss it.

Saturday Workshop March 21st

courier in orange works for me...

I'm posting the agenda to make sure you are up to speed with what's happening with the Video Residency and to report that Gabriel and Joe did some great shooting in the gallery on the weekend, working through white balance, exposure, sound recording and many other details of working with the camera. I'll be posting their short video this week. Also it would be great to know where you are all at with your projects, so post songs, treatments, images and plans to the blog!

WORKSHOP 4
Camera & Sound
March 21st, 2009

12:30pm Check IN and listening session
1:30pm Shot by shot analysis of Matt Wolf's 'Wild Combination' and/or John Hugh's 'Pretty In Pink' - A shot by shot analysis entails looking at each cut in an edit and identifying composition, camera movement (zoom, pan, tilt, tracking etc...) Pretty In Pink employs, a classical cinematic device, continuity editing as a technique. Wild Combination is a documentary that employs a lot of experimental scene construction using voice over and talking head interviews to structure the edit.
2:30pm Camera and Sound Tech. Review & Assignment
Make a short video up to three minutes in length. Work in teams of two. Try to work with a technique or theme related to your project. Be sure to white balance, expose correctly using the iris and shutter, check sound levels and plan your shoot carefully so that you can edit in camera.
5:00pm Check OUT by screening works.

Before next session: Tell us about your process on the blog! Write and/or story board your 3rd draft of your video proposal. And check out these links (archive_prelinger, archive_audionew_NFB_film:RIP, open_source_cinema) to think about using copyright vs open source photos, audio or video for your project.

Stop motion + Oren Lavie

This is fascinating - the stop motion technique. It also reminds me of the aerial shots of Big Art Attack from Art Attack!

The music creates a sort of quiet, morning ambience that suits the images.

Madonna --- the 1998 version

this is not my homework assignment but since i brought it up as relating to my video, i thought i would share with those who didn't know what i was talking about:

Madonna - Ray Of Light (Video)

The Moffatts - Bang Bang Boom

It's kind of cheesy but I really like this song just because of the feelings that go with it. It really reminds me of cheesy feel good romantic comedies from the 90s. It also kind of brings me back to the days with like huge boy bands that somehow brought all this hysteria and excitement. And I think songs like this all describe this sort of perfect ideal of a girl. And in a way, like a high school fantasy version of a girl. In that way, I feel like it really has the same sort of subject matter as my video piece.

That's all
